Gambells Rest Review
I stayed here with a group of 8 people in 4 small Tents this weekend.
Lets start with the good things :
Booking v efficient, People friendly and helpful. Site clean and rubbish free, Hot shower that works, very clean undercover Barbeque area with 4 electric BBQs and 2 sinks. 4 tables that seat 6 each.Site quiet. Pizza in the village fantastic. Pub looked nice but didnt get to check it out (Btw kitchens seem to close at 8.30pm)
Bad things
I have to say I was disappointed on arrival as the pitches are more geared for Campervans/trailers - NOT tents as the ground is hard, uneven graded surface with lots of rocks and stones. Tents have to be pitched in a penned out area which is not conducive to a great social camping experience. Thought from the others was it was a bit souless. I was expecting more of a grassy campsite (the picnic area across the road would have been ideal )
To help other campers in the future if you are going to use a tent then ensure that all have decent mattresses. Would also recommend a tarp to put under the tent to protect the floor. It might be limiting for those that have kids and want them to run around freely unsupervised.
Overall Morton NP worth a visit as stunning scenery and great walks (some steep)

Agreed with most of the points in the previous review, but we didnt do pizza in the village.
We camped in a tent and slept on air mattress so no major issues. The downside is that EVERYTHING gets sandy as there is no real grass in the campsites, and very little natural shade in some of the sites. Bring a small ground sheet for the entrance of the tent to try and trap as much sand as possible before you get into the tent. Those rubber 'square mats' would be perfect, but we made do without them.
Each site is nicely measured out with fencing between, and in a few years there will be flora providing a natural privacy screen.
Big plus for the camping area is that it is not free so the bogans don't go there. Fee was very reasonable though. Also hot showers, clean toilet, bbq area with electric lights and tables are all supplied.
The area close to the cooking area has a small amount of grass for kids, but not enough to kick a footy around. You need to go across the 'road' to the picnic area if you want to run around. (~60m walk from camp site.)
You dont camp here to sit around drinking all day. you make it a base camp and do the many walks in the park, or some day trips to the other waterfalls and towns nearby.
Camp fires not permitted, only the free gas bbqs may be used (or BYO gas BBQ). I agree its not the place to go with a group for a camping trip, but I would definitely stay there again with a family.
We stayed 2 nights.

Yes. The fun Nazis make staying at Gambells rest a challenge. The campsites are not great although the new cooking shelter is a good idea.
I think NPWS should have a look at how well Euroka clearing near Glenbrook works before baning fires and preventing people from camping on the grass. I don't think we would go back there but unfortunately I think that's what NPWS want.

Hi Peter, I would like to send your feedback to the people who manage the campsite. But I was hoping you could be a more specific. Both this and Euroka are managed by the same organisation, so the issue is presumably not a NPWS issue. can you let me know what specific things you would like changed - is it just the use of campfires and been able to camp on the grass. Not sure if it will change anything, but at least we might better understand why.

This is our first time at Gambells Rest. We had a marvelous time, but the weather put a dampener on this. The only comments we would make is that the BBQ shelter came in hand because of the rain. We weren't able to do any exploring due to the inclement weather.
Some improvements to the camp site could be:
1> An extra shower cubicle.
2> A water tank to collect the rain water from the BBQ area, which can be used for other purposes.
3> May be have a look at Bents Basin where an open fire is contained in a 44 gal. drum. This could be a community one, outside the BBQ area.
4> May be look at putting an industrial bin for rubbish (garbage) to be collected weekly, which will be much helpful for the campers, to cover the cost of the collection of the garbage, I do not think a slight increase in camping fees, the campers would mind.
