Walk: Easy

Starting at Tea Tree Picnic Area, this short walk follows a beach access track to Birdie Beach. Along the way, the walk visits Bird Island Lookout, providing a great view of Bird Island, and up and down Birdie Beach. The walk continues down the timber path and steps, across the sand to the edge of the ocean. The beach is not patrolled, so swimming is not recommend, but it is a good place for fishing or enjoying a stroll along the sand. (open in app)

From Tea Tree car park[fac=8214] (at the end of Birdie Beach Drive, Lake Munmorah), this walk heads[1] between the timber bollards[fac=8216] to the large and sheltered 'Visitor Information' sign[2] and seat[fac=8215] (at the back). There is a parking pay station machine[3] (1.4m high buttons) to the right.

Turn right: From the large 'Visitor Information' sheltered sign[4], this walk leads gently downhill over the grass[5] (keeping the car park and road to the right), past the outdoor shower[6] to the visible picnic area shelter and seats.
(Retrace your steps back to the main track, then turn right to continue along this walk.)

Tea Tree Picnic area Alt = 22 m
Tea Tree Picnic area is near the end of Birdie Beach Rd in Munmorah State Conservation Area. There are two BBQs[fac=8222] in a shelter[7] and a 4 picnic tables[fac=8221][fac=8220][fac=8218][fac=8219], and tap water[fac=8223]. An information sign[8] markes the start of a track, leading to a lookout and to Birdie Beach. The grass is usually short and the ground well packed, although gently sloping and uneven in places. There is limited shade, but the heath provides fair protection from the afternoon sea breeze. A quiet picnic area, great if visiting the beach. (There is a toilet a short drive away at the main Birdie Beach car park).

Path: Easy - Wheelchair accessible - footpath
Length = 59 m Time = 1 mins
Climb = 0 m Descent = -3 m
Continue straight: From behind the 'Visitor Information' sign[9][fac=8215], this walk follows the firm gravel track directly away from the car park[10] (towards the ocean) for about 50m to pass the 'Seabird Survival' information sign[11] and find the start of the boardwalk. The walk continues along the timber boardwalk for just shy of 15m to find an intersection (with a boardwalk on the right) and the fenced, un-signposted lookout[12].

Bird Island Lookout Alt = 19 m
Near Tea Tree Picnic area[13], this lookout provides a great view over Birdie Beach. Looking left is the northern end of Birdie Beach and Red Ochre Beach[14] (a clothing optional beach[15]). Looking right, there is a view further down Birdie Beach and out to Bird Island[16]. The lookout has a timber ramp leading up to the (1m high[17]) fenced[18], raised platform (4x3.6m).

(0.07 km) Bird Island Lookout to Birdie Beach (Tea Tree picnic area track)
Walk: Easy - bushtrack
Length = 154 m Time = 3 mins
Climb = 0 m Descent = -15 m
Turn right: From the lookout[19], this walk follows the boardwalk ramp downhill towards the water[20]. The boardwalk leads down some stairs[21] and steps to a sand dune[22]. Here, the walk follows the sand to the shoreline of Birdie Beach[23] (with Bird Island just to the right).

Birdie Beach Alt = 1 m
Birdie Beach is a several kilometre long beach stretching from Budgewoi in the south to near Wybung Head in the north[24]. The sandy beach faces south-east and Bird Island is found about 1.5km from the shore. There are several access points along this beach. The beach is not patrolled.

Munmorah State Conservation Area Link to official closures and fire bans page
Munmorah State Conservation Area is a coastal park south of Catherine Hill Bay at the northern end of the NSW Central Coast. The park is blessed with some wonderful beaches popular with swimmers and surfers. You can stay overnight in either of the two well established campsites, both a short walk from the beach. The park puts on a wonderful wildflower in spring and summer each year. The park entrance gates are locked overnight and are open 5:30am to 9:00p.m during daylight savings period, 6:00am to 6:00pm outside of daylight savings time.
